About me

C132278 cropComing to visual arts from an industry that measured results in time, reliability and increased efficiency has been liberating. I am free to use any medium and create in any size or shape. My only limits are my priorities, my imagination and my volition to learn. Seeking out new mediums and concepts is at the core of my artistic practice; it invigorates and drives me forward. What were once methodical processes have become ritualistic approaches. I enjoy the challenge of converting research and newly learned skills into three-dimensional experiences.

Every project starts with paper and pencil. As the ideas unfold and the research deepens, a particular medium will appear as the most appropriate. Sometimes the process may include prototypes and testing to ensure the medium is “right”. I appreciate the master-draftsman who, though cross-hatching or shading, can capture the essence of a fold or a gesture. Simplicity of form is elegant and compelling to me: it is something I strive for in every work.

Inspiration comes to me as I work.  It may come in the planning phase or the creation phase. Occasionally I will see or hear something that will be tucked away to be used another day. Most pieces take between 12 and 48 hours to finish, once the planning and research are complete. I enjoy the process of creating art: learning the materials, and pushing them and myself into unfamiliar territory. Sometimes the original goal is not met; flashes of inspiration may take me in a radically different direction, but in any case the journey is well worth it.
